Sacramento, CA - The Small School Districts’ Association (SSDA) supports the legal efforts of the California Teachers Association and the California School Boards Association to challenge the state’s withholding of billions of dollars in Proposition 98 funding from public schools.
“Prop 98 was intended to be a floor, and now the state has taken it into the basement. Small and rural districts are required to follow the law – lawmakers in Sacramento should be no exception,” said Scott Borba, SSDA Executive Director. “We support the efforts from CTA and CSBA to protect Proposition 98 and deliver the funding schools are owed. We are optimistic the courts will put an end to this budget gimmick once and for all.”
“Violating the state’s constitution to withhold money from teachers, classrooms, and students is inexcusable, especially in the 4th largest economy in the world,” said Dr. Nicole Newman, SSDA Board President. “SSDA fought against this withholding, and we will now stand with our colleagues at CTA and CSBA to support their fight in court.”
CTA filed its lawsuit on September 15, challenging the $3.9 billion withholding for 2025–26 and a separate $1.9 billion withholding for 2024–25. CSBA filed a similar lawsuit earlier today. SSDA supports these efforts and urges the state to provide districts with the funding and certainty they need to serve students.
