Press Release: Bret Harte Union High School District Hires New Superintendent

Scott Nanik is named new Superintendent beginning July 1

Angels Camp, CA, February 2022  Bret Harte Union High School District school board members unanimously approved Scott Nanik as the district’s new Superintendent of schools at their meeting on February 14, 2022. Mr. Nanik will replace Superintendent Mr. Michael Chimente who will be retiring after 16 years in that position.  “Mr. Chimente has guided our school on a positive path and has kept us financially stable,” said Board President Joan Lark.  “We appreciate everything he has done for our students, staff, and school.  We wish him well in his retirement and welcome Mr. Nanik to our team.  We look forward to working with Mr. Nanik and know it will be a smooth transition.”

Scott has been a local educator for over 21 years as a Teacher, Principal, Director, Assistant Superintendent, and Associate Superintendent.   He is currently the Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools where he has held that position since July 2017.   Scott is a graduate of San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics.

“Scott Nanik has a tremendous work ethic, is a well-respected education leader, and has a student-centered leadership style that will be pivotal in empowering Bret Harte teachers, staff, and board to move the district forward,” said Tim Taylor, Executive Director of CA Small Schools Association and coordinated the search.  “I commend the staff, community, and Governing Board at Bret Harte for their help with selecting Scott Nanik.   It truly is a special district and great opportunity for Scott to lead the Bullfrogs.”

Scott is a longtime resident of Calaveras County and his children attended Bret Harte High School.   He is also the 2006 Calaveras County Teacher of the Year, 2010 Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Continuation School Administrator of the Year for Region 7, and won the coveted 2020 ACSA Bob Price Distinguished Service Award.

I look forward to utilizing my 21-years of experience in education to work with the school board, staff, students, parents, and community in continuing to develop the excellence for which Bret Harte is known” says Mr. Nanik.
