SSDA

On behalf of the Small School Districts' Association (SSDA), our Board of Directors, and the many small and rural school districts we represent throughout California, we extend our deepest condolences to Congressman LaMalfa's family, friends, and colleagues.

Rep. LaMalfa understood deeply that small and rural school districts face unique challenges and deserve strong champions at both the state and federal levels. His commitment to equitable opportunity for rural students was evident in his bipartisan leadership on issues critical to education funding and community stability.

Congressman LaMalfa, along with Rep. Joe Neguse (D-CO), introduced the bipartisan Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act in the House of Representatives. He not only helped craft this vital legislation but also played a key role in building bipartisan support and ensuring it was successfully passed into law. The Secure Rural Schools program has provided essential, dependable funding to rural counties and school districts across California and the nation, helping sustain educational programs, student services, and local infrastructure in communities impacted by federal land ownership.

Beyond this landmark effort, he advocated for rural economies through his work on forestry, natural resource management, and community infrastructure, strengthening the long-term sustainability and resilience of rural regions. These efforts supported the communities surrounding small school districts and, in turn, indirectly benefited rural students, families, and educational opportunities.

SSDA is grateful for his years of service and advancing the needs of small and rural school districts. His legacy of bipartisan advocacy will continue to benefit rural students and educational leaders for years to come.
