As we approach the holiday season, I want to express my sincere appreciation for your partnership, leadership, and steadfast commitment to California’s small and rural school districts, charter schools, and our associate members who partner with and support the communities we serve. This time of year offers an opportunity to reflect on our shared work, recognize progress, and look ahead with purpose and optimism.
I am writing to share an important update regarding leadership at the Small School Districts’ Association. After thoughtful consideration, Yuri Calderon has resigned from the role of Executive Director. The SSDA Board of Directors is unanimous in recognizing and celebrating the many accomplishments achieved during Yuri’s tenure. Under Yuri’s leadership, SSDA experienced continued membership growth, expanded professional development and governance support, strengthened statewide and national advocacy efforts, and launched new programs and services that directly benefited small and rural districts. These contributions have helped build a strong foundation and advance the Association’s mission in meaningful ways. The Board is also united in expressing its appreciation for Yuri’s service and dedication, and we extend our best wishes as Yuri embarks on the next chapter of his professional journey.
To ensure continuity and stability, the Board has appointed Dr. George Sziraki as Interim Executive Director. Many of you are already familiar with George. He has previously served SSDA in an interim executive leadership role and is the retired Superintendent of the Placer Union High School District. George brings deep institutional knowledge, extensive leadership experience, and a clear understanding of the unique needs of small and rural school districts. We are grateful for his willingness to step into this role and provide steady leadership during this transition. The Board anticipates advertising the Executive Director position next week and will share additional information with members as the process moves forward.
Looking ahead, the Board remains fully committed to maintaining momentum for the Association. We are working closely with George and the SSDA team to support ongoing programs, advocacy efforts, and member services. As we close out the year, I extend my warmest holiday wishes to you and your communities. Thank you for the essential work you do every day on behalf of students, families, and staff. I look forward to continuing our shared work in the year ahead.
Educationally yours,
Nicole Newman, Ed.D.
SSDA President
