01.25.10: SSDA Opposition Letter on Governor’s Budget
By David Walrath
SSDA has sent a letter to legislators and legislative staff regarding the Governor’s proposed K-12 education funding for 2008-09 through 2010-11.
SSDA was shocked when after vowing to protect education the Governor then proposed more than $1.7 billion ($275 per ADA) in real K-12 cuts in state funds. The budget proposed to manipulate Proposition 98 in order to cut schools and free up state money to backfill lost state funding from the federal government.
Schools are expected to lose $1.8 billion in federal funds as well the $1.7 billion. This double cut is not protecting education no matter what is said in a State of the State speech.
