May 9, 2008: ARB Attack on School Transportation
By David Walrath
This proposed rule by the Air Resources Board (ARB) is one of the biggest threats to school transportation. Starting in 2010, it will force you to replace engines on your older school buses!
1. Attachment 1 (click here) is an excellent letter by Martin Ward to Senator Cox on this issue. I would urge everyone to do similar letters to their local legislators with a cc to Mary D. Nichols, Chairperson for the ARB.
2. The second attachment (click here) is ARB’s simple one pager on the rule.
3. Attachment 3 (click here) is a letter from ARB that lists the workshops, which start on May 21, 2008. The following are the workshop dates:
|
The day workshops will be held:
El Monte on May 21 |
The evening workshops will be held:
El Centro on May 27 |
You want to make sure you attend a workshop with a special pullout for school buses – see attachment 3.
4. Click here for the January 22 proposed regulations. (i) (2) says that if a trap does not work on the bus, then the engine must be replaced.
This link will get to ARB’s page on the diesel regulations:

This link will allow you to add your name to the ARB’s mailing list:

ARB needs to remove publicly owned school buses from the proposed regulation or funds need to be provided for new buses and for retrofit devises.
This information is from Stephen Rhoads from the School Transportation Coalition.
