03.15.10: A Better Week for Schools

By David Walrath

Last week was a good week for schools. The State Controller announced that the state revenues were continuing to exceed – by about $600 million – the budget as passed revenue estimates.  Also the Treasurer sold state bonds, including school bonds, which means there will be new funds for school facility apportionments. The 8th Extraordinary Session adjourned with no new school cuts beyond the increased state apportionment deferrals.

Next week the legislative Budget Committees will be looking at the Governor’s Budget proposals, but no action is expected until after the May Revision. In two weeks the Senate and Assembly Education Committees will begin hearing new legislation.

As strange as it seems, the state is back to its normal schedule. Given the drama of last year, normal is a positive sign.

The SSDA Annual Conference will provide further information on what to expect for the rest of this year and next year. The Conference is planned by small school districts for small school districts. Please join other small school district trustees and superintendents in working for education. Click here for more information and to register.
