Legislation & Advocacy: Budget Updates

08.06.09: Community Day School Update

By David Walrath

For categorical aid programs with absolute flexibility (referred to as Tier III), part of the final budget agreement was that funding would be based on 2007-08 rather than 2008-09. This means new Community Day Schools formed in 2008-09 might not generate new additional funding to be in the flexibility funding.

The budget trailer bill (Assembly Bill 2 of the Fourth Extraordinary Session) added Education Code Section 42606 to allow school districts to apply for funding these new schools.

SSDA encourages all small districts which started new schools in 2008-09 to write to the State Board of Education and Superintendent of Public Instruction to set up the application system for this funding and state your intent to apply for additional funding.

Please also send a copy of the letters to your State Assembly Member and State Senator.
