04.07.08 Federal Update

HR 5613
The SSDA-supported HR 5613, which would continue payments for transportation and administration costs for Medicaid eligible special education students, passed unanimously out of the full House Committee on Energy and Commerce yesterday and is expected to be voted on by the full House of Representatives next Wednesday.
Congratulations on your efforts, the reimbursement payments will next be heard in the Senate, please send letters to Senators Feinstein and Boxer on this important issue.
Secure Rural Schools and Communities Act
No action has occurred on continuing the funding for the Secure Rural Schools and Communities Act that provides payments to forest counties and school districts that have lost revenue because of the decline in forest activities. The intent is to attach the funding to the Iraq supplemental funding bill; however, the Iraq supplemental funding has not been brought up in the House and until that happens there is no assurance of continued funding for this program.
Please continue to write your member of the House of Representatives and ask them to support continued funding for the Secure Rural School and Communities Act.
