More Money for K-14 Schools

Today the Governor released his May Revision which included a substantial number of new programs along with expanding existing programs. This update is being broken into two pieces with some of the more significant actions today. Tomorrow’s update will provide more detail and address those programs not addressed in today’s update.
- Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) increased from 4.04% to 4.53%
- Slightly higher current year Average Daily Attendance (ADA) and lower budget year ADA.
- Drops January proposal to shift home-to-school transportation to the Public Transportation Account and rebench Proposition 98
- Continues Child Care shift into Proposition 98
New Proposals
- $25 million for Career Technical Education (CTE) counselors in grades 7-12. Priority for schools with high CTE enrollments, career path options and CTE course sections, $45,000 minimum
- Adds $100 million to the January Budget's $80 million for CTE equipment.
- $50 million to hire 1,000 CTE teachers with a $45,000 per school minimum for high schools with more than 400 students
- School nutrition per meal increase of 4.7 cents
- School breakfast start-up grant increase of $4.4 million
- $8.5 million to county offices of education to provide education and technical assistance for school district meal programs
- $50 million for second phase preschool expansion
- $65 million for two years (about $32.5 million per year) for California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CalPADS)
- $2 million for California School Information Services (CSIS) assistance
- $100 million for a school safety competitive grant to county offices of education partnering with K-12 schools
- $9 million to county offices to hire school resource officers for working in schools with gang violence
- $50 million for college preparatory course teachers in high schools with 400 or more students. There would be $45,000 minimum per eligible school.
